Machina community is the local government headquarters of Machina LGA of Yobe State with a single health facility serving 10,000-11,000 population. The facility has no electricity, medical doctor or nurse, and is being managed by the community health workers. While its also difficult to access the facility at night, the community members most of the times have to transport their patient to Federal Medical Centre Nguru for proper treatment.

We have initiated #EquipMachina campaign to track the construction of a PHC with solar-powered borehole at Machina to be executed by the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA). We invite the public to get involved in the campaign today. Help us in this campaign so that.

Machina people will have access to good healthcare facility through construction of the healthcare facility.

BCDA, the Implementing Agency Petitioned to ICPC, EFCC, Auditor-General and the National Assembly

27 February 2018: Having not heard from the BCDA on details sought regarding the project implementation such as the contract award documents, successful contractor details, actual project amount and bill of quantities, as well as confirming that no sort of implementation had started at the community, we wrote a petition to the ICPC, EFCC, Auditor-General of the Federation and the National Assembly (Senate and House of Reps) to conduct investigation over the project.

Machina Health Center Lacks Water and Electricity Says the Head of the Health Center

4 October 2017: Head of the facility added that ”Go round this hospital and you will not find even a hand-pump borehole that can provide water that will be used in here. Who runs a health facility without water? The importance/need of water cannot be overemphasised.

On the issue of electricity, we have to use touch lights when attending to women who are under labour. Patients are left in darkness at nightfall. This issue can easily be ameliorated if there is a power supply.”

Head of Health Center Lamented on the Lack of Sanitation Facility

4 October 17: During our interaction with the Head of the only health facility in the community, he said “It is disturbing that a hospital like this has no toilet where patients who are in critical condition will make use of. We have to take women under labour out of the clinic to answer the call of nature and bring them back to continue.

A single toilet will ease the suffering encountered by women, small children and aged people. Patients and staff easing themselves in the bush is embarrassing and it has an adverse effect on the health of the community in general.”

Follow The Money Team Went on a Community Outreach to Machina

4 October 17: During the community outreach to Machina community ( the ancient city of Machina), we interacted with the District Head of Machina who lamented bitterly about the plight of women and children on the issues of health. He confided in us that when the condition of women and children become severe, they have to be rushed to either Federal Medical Centre in Nguru LGA of Yobe or to Birniwa Local Government of neighbouring State of Jigawa for proper healthcare.
