HOW MILLIONS OF NAIRA IS BEING SPENT TO “POWER -UP” SHERE, IN BWARI, ABUJA.

Follow The Money to provide Power, Road and Water in #PowerShere

The Story of #PowerShere

Shere is a village with a population of 9000 people ( about 3,000 people lives in Shere community itself) in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory. It is about 13km from Bwari town. There is a new health facility in this community, that has not been functional for 8 months now, and the village suffers from bad road, no electricity, with an old ill-equipped health care facility.

In 2008, it was reported that Hon. Philip Taminu Aduda initiated a multi-million Naira electrification project in six communities in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory which included Shere community. Since 5 years ago, electric poles were erected, and a transformer was installed (as seen in our feature image, but there has not been electricity and residents have to rely on use of lamps, candles and torch lights.

For a community under an Area council with one of the highest revenue allocation from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) in the FCT, which in May 2013 hit 169.12 million Naira, it would have been expected the Council would have provided the community with access to water, 2 or more boreholes but it is quite the contrary and residents live in a disturbing state.

At Follow The Money, we believe, if the road was completed, and the electrical equipment work, Shere will become powered, and also empowered, as the new health center can rely on the source of power, and borehole can also be powered by electricity to provide water. Furthermore, if the project (Galuwyi – Shere Road, Water and Electricity) that was embarked upon by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA)’s Department of Satellite Towns Infrastructures was completed, Shere would have been a conducive environment to stay in.

January 14, 2016: The Follow The Money team was at Shere, Bwari Area Council of Abuja to sensitize the community, and conduct assessment on infrastructures available to the 3,000 inhabitants of Shere community. It found our that the community do not have power (although there is a power line and a transformer installed since 2008), a good road (although we saw some abandoned road builders) , no clean water source, and a dilapidated health facility (there is a new empty health facility built March 2015)
